These destinations boast a rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty that beckons travelers with its warm embrace. From the sun-drenched beaches of the Amalfi Coast to the charming villages of the Greek islands, the Mediterranean offers an enchanting escape for those seeking warmth and relaxation in December.

The Mediterranean wonders of warm European countries in December extend beyond the coastal regions to include vibrant cities, lush countryside, and ancient landmarks. Spain

December in Spain offers a wide range of experiences depending on the region. The Canary Islands are a warm retreat, with temperatures averaging 66°F (19°C) and a laid-back, beachy atmosphere.

The mainland is cooler but more festive for those looking to get in the holiday spirit. You will find the most vibrant Christmas markets in Madrid and Barcelona. In the southern part like Andalucía, daytime temperatures often reach a comfortable 60°F (16°C), ideal for exploring cities like Seville or Granada without the summer crowds. In contrast, northern areas can be much cooler. Budget-wise, it’s off-peak season, so expect lower prices in accommodation and flights, except during the Christmas and New Year period. The lack of tourist throngs means more space in museums and at historical sites.

For unique experiences, join the local festive celebrations or visit the ski resorts in the Sierra Nevada for winter sports. These mountains are located near Granada, which is my favorite city in Spain, especially in off-peak season when there is less crowds and more mild temperatures. My suggestion would be to spend some time in the city and then head to the mountains for some skiing to get the best of both worlds.

Italy

In December, while much of Italy succumbs to the winter chill, regions such as Sicily and Calabria in the south offer a respite with their milder climates. You can expect daytime temperatures around 59°F (15°C) in Sicily, perfect for leisurely exploring its rich historical sites or enjoying the local wines in a more tranquil setting, minus the peak-season crowds.

Calabria, characterized as the toe of Italy’s boot, presents similar mild weather, which complements its festive Christmas markets.

Over in Sardinia, the sea may be too cool for a swim, but the island’s natural beauty is just as captivating. And though you won’t be basking in the summer sun, southern Italy provides a gentle warmth that’s coupled with the perks of off-season travel: fewer tourists and more attractive prices.

If the Amalfi Coast is on your bucket list, December is the perfect time to visit. In December, the Amalfi Coast transforms into a serene escape, far removed from its summer bustle. With temperatures hovering around 55°F (13°C), it’s cool yet comfortable for enjoying the dramatic coastline and exploring the quaint, picturesque towns without the crowds or the inflated prices. The crisp air and clear skies often grant uninterrupted views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, making it a perfect time for photography enthusiasts. While some establishments may be closed for the season, the open cafes still serve steaming cups of Italian coffee and fresh pastries, allowing visitors to savor the local flavors amidst the tranquil beauty of a quieter Amalfi.

Greece

Greece in December is definitely cooler that usual. Crete, however, remains relatively warm, and while some tourist services may be reduced, you can enjoy the island’s natural beauty in peace.

Mainland Greece, while cooler, offers savings in travel costs and uncrowded visits to ancient sites. Athens sees temperatures between 48-57°F (9-14°C). Seasonal events and traditional Greek Christmas celebrations provide a unique cultural experience. Indoor museums and cafes offer sanctuary against the cool Mediterranean breeze.

Portugal

Portugal’s December weather remains mild, especially on its islands and the Algarve coast, where temperatures average around 62°F (17°C).

Madeira

Madeira is an island off the northwest coast of Africa. While that sounds promising, the island has some crazy microclimates. Some areas of the island will feel like 70°F with sun while other areas will be cold, windy and rainy. For the the warmer temperatures, stay closer to sea level. It’s also important to note what side of the island the sun hits at different times of the day. The mountains on the island can block the sun from reaching the other side, which makes it feel cooler. Madeira is also known for its spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks!

Azores

The Azores, an archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, is thought to be the Hawaii of Europe. In December, you can expect temperatures to range from around 57°F (14°C) to 62°F (17°C). Not to be fooled, winter is the rainy season in the Azores, so you can also expect rain and possibly windy conditions. Despite the rain, December can still be a good time to visit for those who enjoy nature without the crowds.

The lush landscapes and volcanic terrain offer dramatic scenery, with fewer tourists allowing for a more solitary experience of the islands’ natural beauty. Thermal baths, like those in Furnas on São Miguel Island, are particularly enjoyable when the air is cooler. Outdoor activities such as hiking, whale watching, and visiting the hot springs are still possible, though it’s best to check the local weather and sea conditions on the day.

Keep in mind that some tours and businesses may operate on winter schedules with reduced hours or days of operation. The Azores also have a range of cultural and festive events around the Christmas season, which adds a unique charm to a December visit.

Mainland

Algarve climates are much more consistent. Being the southernmost region of Portugal, you can expect warmer temperatures. The coast of Algarve is the perfect destination if you’re looking for a more relaxed holiday.

Lisbon and Porto are cooler and occasionally rainy but beautifully illuminated for Christmas. It’s an economical time to travel, with fewer tourists and lower prices. Cultural events and Christmas markets add to the allure, and indoor attractions like Porto’s wine cellars or Lisbon’s museums offer cozy escapes from the occasional drizzle.

Cyprus

If you’re looking for a hidden gem, look no further. Cyprus is pleasant Mediterranean destination in December, with coastal temperatures around 63°F (17°C). The island is quieter and more affordable, with historical sites like the Tombs of the Kings more accessible. Nicosia and the coastal cities maintain a lively atmosphere with Christmas preparations. In the Troodos Mountains, you might even experience a white Christmas. Local traditions and festivities make for a warm holiday experience despite the cooler air.

Malta

Another hidden gem. Malta in December is serene, with temperatures around 61°F(16°C). The historic cities of Valletta and Mdina take on a festive atmosphere with holiday lights and decorations. It’s a cost-effective time to visit, with reduced prices and fewer tourists. The island offers a mix of seasonal activities and historical exploration. From the prehistoric temples to the Christmas markets, there’s a blend of the ancient and the seasonal to discover.

Montenegro

Hear me out. Being from Chicago, I consider anything above 40°F in the winter to be warm. In December, average temperatures in Montenegro range around 45°F (7°C), so it counts, right? Coastal areas like Kotor retain their charm with fewer crowds, allowing for peaceful exploration of medieval architecture and stunning bay views. While some seasonal businesses may be closed, you can still enjoy the local culture, festive Christmas markets, and the possibility of a mild winter day.

It can be colder in the northern mountains, sometimes with snow—perfect for winter sports enthusiasts. Similar to my suggestion for Spain, spending a few days on the coast and a few up in the mountains make for the perfect combination. If you strictly want to stick to the warmer climates, I still suggest taking a drive up into the mountains, just for the day, as it’s absolutely beautiful. Check out my blog post about the perfect day trip in Montenegro for more information.

Croatia

In Croatia, cities like Dubrovnik, Split, and Zagreb come alive with festive lights and Christmas markets. The temperatures in coastal areas like Dubrovnik can be mild, averaging around 50°F (10°C), but the interior regions are colder and can experience snowfall. Zagreb, the capital, is known for its award-winning Advent in Zagreb festival, featuring open-air markets, ice-skating, and a variety of cultural events. While the iconic beaches are too cold for swimming, the historic sites and national parks like Plitvice Lakes offer a unique beauty with fewer tourists, and the wintery landscape can be quite magical.
